Understanding the Triple Marker Test

The Triple Marker Test, or Triple Screen Test, is a second-trimester non-invasive blood test usually performed between weeks 15 and 20 of pregnancy. This test screens for the risk of some chromosomal defects and neural tube defects in the unborn child.

Triple Marker Test Measures

The key components measured in this test include Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG), and Estriol (uE3). AFP is a protein produced by the fetal liver, and abnormal levels may indicate neural tube defects or chromosomal disorders. hCG is a hormone produced by the placenta, and elevated levels can suggest an increased risk of Down syndrome. Estriol, an estrogen secreted by both the fetus and placenta, tends to be low in certain chromosomal disorders. By analyzing the levels of these substances, medical professionals can estimate the risk of specific fetal abnormalities, allowing for early diagnosis and timely intervention.
