Why is the Amylase Test Important?

Amylase test is primarily used to diagnose as well as track conditions of the pancreas such as pancreatitis. Elevated or reduced amylase levels have been discovered to indicate a myriad of illnesses related to health, such as

• Chronic or Acute Pancreatitis: Pancreatitis can lead to elevated levels of amylase.
• Pancreatic Pseudocyst: A fluid-filled cyst in the pancreas that may affect enzyme levels.
• Salivary Gland Infection: Mumps infection has been reported to increase amylase levels secondary to salivary gland infection.
• Kidney Disease: Kidney damage can lead to a rise in blood amylase levels.

Types of Amylase Tests

• Blood Amylase Test: Measures the amount of amylase in the blood. It's used most commonly to detect acute pancreatitis.
• Urine Amylase Test: Assays amylase in urine, which may be used to diagnose chronic pancreatitis or follow the progression of the disease.

When Should You Get an Amylase Test?

Your doctor may prescribe an amylase test if you are experiencing such symptoms as:

• Severe stomach pain, especially in the upper abdomen
• Nausea and vomiting
• Fever
• Loss of appetite
• Jaundice (yellow coloration of skin and eyes)

These symptoms can be a symptom of pancreatitis or other diseases associated with it.

Preparation for the Amylase Test

For a blood amylase test:

• Fasting: You may need to fast for 8-12 hours before the test.
• Medications: Inform your doctor if you are taking any medications because some medications can affect amylase levels.

For a urine amylase test:

• 24-Hour Collection: You will need to collect all the urine in 24 hours for accurate measurement.

Interpreting Amylase Test Results

Normal Range: Amylase levels can be varied, but a normal blood amylase level is typically between 40-140 U/L.

Elevated Levels: A raised amylase level could suggest pancreatitis, salivary gland infections, or other pancreatic disorders.

Low Levels: Reduced amylase levels could be indicative of pancreatic damage or kidney illness.

Other Tests Usually Ordered

To better understand the status of the pancreas, your doctor may also order:

• Lipase Test: Checks the level of the lipase enzyme, which, along with amylase, helps in diagnosing pancreatitis.
• Liver Function Tests: Tests the liver's health because liver disease can affect digestive enzymes.
• Abdominal Imaging: CT scan or ultrasound to visualize the pancreas and surrounding organs.
