Understanding the ANA (Antinuclear Antibody) Test

The anti-nuclear antibody or ANA test is performed to detect the presence of anti-nuclear antibodies in an individual’s bloodstream. If the ANA test results are positive, they may indicate the presence of an autoimmune disorder. An autoimmune disorder is a health condition in which one’s immune system mistakenly starts attacking its own cells. The ANA blood test looks for certain types of antibodies called anti-nuclear antibodies in an individual’s blood. Every human being’s immune system makes antibodies to fight off several types of infections and diseases, but anti-nuclear antibodies are those that attack the body’s own tissues by mistaking them for harmful foreign invaders. This is called an autoimmune reaction and is detected with the help of an ANA serum test. Positive results of the ANA test confirm the presence of antinuclear antibodies and may indicate conditions like Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), certain types of autoimmune diseases, a viral infection, or some other health conditions that can lead to the creation of antinuclear antibodies, such as cancer.
