The MAX@Home Heart Rate Calculator is a free clinical tool that helps you determine your Maximum Heart Rate (MHR) and calculate personalised Target Heart Rate (THR) zones for safe, effective exercise. Your heart rate during exercise is one of the most reliable indicators of workout intensity. Train too lightly and you miss meaningful cardiovascular benefit; train too hard without the right guidance and you risk cardiac strain. Your personalised heart rate zones remove the guesswork entirely.
Enter your age. The calculator uses the Tanaka Formula a peer-reviewed, age-specific method validated in adults to compute your Maximum Heart Rate and five personalised training zones. It also provides resting heart rate interpretation guidelines.

How to measure resting heart rate accurately: Measure first thing in the morning, before getting out of bed. Count beats for 60 seconds. Take 3 consecutive readings and average them.
Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats. A higher HRV generally indicates better cardiovascular fitness, lower stress, and stronger autonomic nervous system function. HRV monitoring is increasingly used in cardiac rehabilitation, sports medicine, and chronic disease management. For most adults, heart rate should not exceed their MHR (calculated as 208 – 0.7 × age). Sustained exercise above 90% of MHR is considered maximal intensity and not appropriate for most people, especially those with cardiac risk factors. Always exercise within your prescribed zones.
A resting heart rate between 60–100 bpm is technically within normal range, but consistently higher values (above 90) have been associated with greater cardiovascular risk in studies. Causes include dehydration, anaemia, thyroid overactivity, anxiety, or caffeine. A blood test and medical review can identify the cause.
Hypertension and elevated heart rate often co-exist and mutually worsen cardiovascular risk. High BP forces the heart to work harder, potentially causing the heart rate to rise over time. Conversely, a persistently elevated heart rate itself increases long-term BP.
